Review: MAC Shell Pearl Beauty Powder

mac-year-of-the-snake-shell-pearl-boxMAC’s Shell Pearl Beauty Powder is from the online-only, limited edition collection, Year of the Snake. All of the products in this line are embossed with the beautiful snake print. MAC describes this product as a “pale peach with gold pearl” that can be used as a “highlight, soft blush, or overall finish”. Shell Pearl comes packaged in a standard MAC compact with mirror. It contains 10g of product which is the same as the MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural, but costs $6 less.

Shell Pearl is a beautiful peachy gold! It is very smooth to the touch and when applied, looks like a sheen rather than being glittery. On my skin tone, this is a highlight shade, but I could definitely see it being a blush on fair skin. I’m not convinced that this will work as an all over finishing powder (like MAC claims) because it seems too shimmery to be used for that purpose. It provides more of a subtle highlight than most MAC Mineralized Skinfinishes do. This beauty powder reminds me of the MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinishes in terms of texture, but it is not as pigmented. Because of it’s subtle sheen, I think it would make a great highlight for someone who is not used to wearing highlight. Also, since it is not glittery, it doesn’t seem to accentuate my pores.

I know the swatch above isn’t the best, but it is very hard to catch the beauty and dimension of a highlighting product in pictures. The picture below of the powder on my face will give you a better idea of how Shell Pearl looks.

On my skin, this powder wears all day. The longest that I’ve worn it thus far has been about 12 hours and it wore well.

Overall, I think this beauty powder is awesome! After comparing it to the multitude of highlighters in my collection, I couldn’t find a dupe for this very unique shade. This is the first MAC beauty powder that I have tried, and I am really impressed with the texture and wear. If you are interested, check it out soon because it is limited edition. As of right now it is still available on for $24.
