Review: NARS Dragon Girl Velvet Matte Lip Pencil

I finally found my perfect red lip! Red lipstick has always been very intimidating for me. Lately though, probably due to all the holiday makeup looks that I have seen, I really wanted to try a red lipstick. I looked all over the internet for swatches and pictures to try to get an idea of one that would suit me. Finally, I came across a video that mentioned NARS Dragon Girl and they described it as being very similar to MAC Ruby Woo, but not as drying. That intrigued me because Ruby Woo seems to be loved by women of all ages and skin colors. Unfortunately, I was not able to find many swatches for Dragon Girl on women of my color. That is one of the main reasons I wanted to share my views and provide some pictures for you!

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils are formulated to work as a lipliner or lip color. NARS says that these lip pencils are are long lasting, non-drying, and provide a velvety finish. The packaging it comes in is like a sleek jumbo pencil (similar in size to the NYX jumbo pencils). They can be purchased anywhere NARS is sold for $24.

I use this pencil as a lip liner and lipstick. In my opinion, it definitely lives up to the NARS claims. I am able to wear this lipstick all day without having to touch up very much. For instance, I wore this on Christmas for about 9 hours and only had to touch up once. Needless to say, I ate and drank multiple times throughout the day.

Initially when I tried this lip pencil in the store, I was very surprised by how creamy it felt. Regular lip pencils tend to be a little drier, while this felt like a lipstick going on. Throughout the day, it felt very light on my lips and did not dry them out.

The shade Dragon Girl is a very classic red that will look great on almost any skin tone. This is the most classic red shade I own and I love it! The picture above is of all the red shades in my collection, and Dragon Girl is clearly the best for my skin tone. It can look super dressy or laid back depending on what clothes it is paired with. For instance, I have worn this with boots and a thermal and basically no other makeup and it looked awesome. I’ve also worn it with a dressier sweater and slacks and it made me look very polished.

Overall, I think NARS Dragon Girl was a great investment! It is the perfect, classic red that will look good on almost anyone. The application is very luxurious and it wears for quite a long time. The finish is matte, but is not drying to the lips. I really have absolutely no complaints about it!

Final Grade: A+
