Staple Hair Product Review Series: Shea Moisture Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo

I get quite a few questions regarding my normal hair routine, so I decided to start a blog series that gives an overview of my staple hair products (click here for a full listing). Each post in this series will give pros and cons for each of my tried and true products. I will be going in the same order as the items are listed on my Staple Hair Products page. Feel free to ask questions and comment on your experiences with these products because your input helps others!

The first product in this series is the Shea Moisture Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine shampoo. This sulfate-free shampoo normally retails for $9.99-$11.99 for 12 fl oz and can be purchased at Walgreens or Target. As you can see, I snagged this on clearance for only $4.99!

Key Ingredients: coconut oil, silk protein, neem oil, shea butter

Product Texture/Consistency: thick, creamy

Product Claims: Shea Moisture claims that this shampoo “gently cleanses, hydrates and detangles hair for bouncy healthy curls.” They also say that this imparts “moisture, body, and shine” to “thick, curly hair.”

How the Product Measures up to the Claims: I’ve found that this shampoo does indeed gently cleanse my hair. After shampooing, I feel like my hair is definitely clean, but it doesn’t feel like all of the natural oils have been removed. I even think that in a crunch I could detangle my hair with this shampoo.

How I Use This Product: I apply this to soaking wet hair and massage into scalp. I then rinse it completely out before using a conditioner. This is the shampoo that I use about once per week.

Overall Thoughts

  •  easily accessible
  • not too expensive (considering 1 bottle lasted me around 6 months)
  • thick & creamy consistency
  • appealing scent
  • sulfate-free (not as drying as sulfate containing shampoos)
  • lathers well
  • cleanses gently

  • you may need a stronger shampoo if you have heavy build-up on your hair

Have you tried this shampoo? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
